One Moment

You love us! You really love us!

If you’ve been checking DalNews lately, you may have noticed an article (written by Rebecca Schneidereit) concerning OneMoment, entitled Quidditch on the Quad! (check the article on our site here in case the link is broken)

The group hopes its fresh approach to fundraising will resonate with students, who can enjoy socializing and having a good time while helping children and teens under age 15 who have HIV and AIDS.

“We don’t want to use guilt tactics to get people to give,” says Ms. Soh. “I’d rather people feel happy, and through feeling happy, make other people happy. It’s different from what other charities do. I’m sure their tactics work as well … but we wanted to try something different.”

Vice-president Fahad Kabir’s conception of the secondary goal, accessible on One Moment’s website is more bittersweet: “The second objective is to create awareness … a realization (of) one’s own mortality,” he says, adding that too many people rush through life and miss out as a result.

“Life is made up of our time on earth and a lot can happen in that time … this society is here to make sure one can take a break from life itself and, for at least one second, take a moment for oneself.”

One Moment was created by Ms. Soh, Mr. Kabir and Geoff Seto, the society’s president. All three went to Halifax West High School and are in their second year of studies at Dalhousie.

If you are interested in being part of Quidditch, as well as other events (we do have a few planned between now and then!) why not sign up for our mailing list? We’re still looking for volunteers to help plan and run everything!

Quidditch is Coming to Dalhousie!

quidditch.jpgWell, Muggle Quidditch.

That’s right! As part of a fundraising effort for OneMoment, we’re planning on holding a Dalhousie Quidditch event sometime this semester. We’re still in the early planning stages at the moment, and would like to gauge the amount of interest in the Dalhousie population. Namely, we need Quidditch teams.

We’re currently aiming for four teams - ideally all teams will get together before the actual event to learn the rules of Muggle Quidditch and have a few games against each other. Each team member will be charged a $2 entrance fee to help us cover some costs and will be responsible for their own team costume (only cloaks are mandatory). BYOB (bring your own broom - mandatory. You can’t fly without a broom!) as well, no sharpened ends please.

If you’re interested in getting a team together, contact me or post on facebook with your preferred position and teammates. You don’t need all seven people to make a team - feel free to sign up as an individual as well and I’ll slot you into a group.

Head on after the break for a few more details!

Winter Break Update

santa-bunny.jpgOneMoment’s Grawood Event was a great success! The music was great and the good times ran freely - thank you to everyone who made our first fundraising event possible! We couldn’t have done it without you. Make sure to take a look at the photos of the event. As of today, we have raised $401.61 in proceeds!
Now that another year has gone by, a new blinking baby semester is ours to raise as we like. We have already planned several fun and zany events for the upcoming weeks and we will keep you updated as the details emerge. If you would like to be a part of this volunteer-wise, please be sure to send us a quick email to be added to the pool.
Thank you all, and Happy New Year!
